When I first heard about Ozempic, it was through that unforgettable “O-O-O-Ozempic” commercial. If you’re anything like me and remember the song “Magic” by Pilot, you’ll understand why that jingle lodged itself in my brain. It aired around the same time I found out I had diabetes, and I remember thinking, “Hmm, that might be something to try in the future.” It’s funny looking back because, at the time, it felt like a niche product with a catchy jingle. Little did I know that Ozempic would soon become a household name. It’s amazing how a couple of years can turn a little-known medication into something that’s practically everywhere.
Fast forward to about a year ago when I actually started taking Ozempic. It was primarily to manage my diabetes, but I soon discovered it had some surprising perks. I didn’t experience the weight loss that many others did; instead, I gained a bit. With my blood sugar under better control, I found I could enjoy foods that were previously off-limits without worrying about sugar spikes. It felt liberating after years of strict dietary restrictions.
Initially, I was frustrated when Ozempic would run out of stock, especially knowing some people were using it for weight loss. But after educating myself, I realized Ozempic is crucial for many, not just for blood sugar control but also for managing “food noise.” “Food noise” refers to a constant preoccupation with food and a persistent feeling of hunger, no matter how much someone eats. This isn’t a personal failing but often a medical issue where the body doesn’t produce enough of certain hormones that signal fullness. Ozempic works by mimicking the natural GLP-1 hormone, which helps manage appetite and reduce that constant food chatter, allowing individuals to focus less on food and more on other aspects of life.
Unfortunately, society still seems to think it’s acceptable to comment on others’ bodies and choices. I’m not going to lie – the first time I couldn’t get my medication I panicked big time. It was keeping me from having those spikes that do damage to your body. I thought about all the people who didn’t have to worry about that who were taking MY medication.
That’s when I decided to educate myself. It’s not for me to decide which health issue is severe. As a society it is time we stop judging overweight people for some personal failing and realize they just might have a condition that is causing it. No one would go up to someone with heart failure and call them lazy.
It’s reminiscent of how people used to criticize those who opted for weight loss surgery, as if any of these paths are “easy.” They are not. It’s never easy, and it’s harmful and discriminatory to suggest otherwise.
One particular story stands out to me. A friend of mine posted on Facebook about taking an Ozempic-type drug. He’d lost a lot of weight and got his blood sugar under control. Despite explaining that he was taking it for health reasons, people commented, accusing him of taking the “easy way out” to lose weight and predicting he’d gain it all back. It was a harsh reminder of how people judge others’ health journeys without understanding the full story.
In the battle between blood sugar and fat for Ozempic – we can all win.
