So with this new Freestyle program I think I’ll be using a lot more bulgar wheat. In my post A Love Letter to Bulgar Wheat I wax poetic about how much I love the stuff.
And I mean I seriously love it.
For those of you Instant Pot “Potheads” out there I have found what I consider to be the perfect way to cook it.
So 1 cup of bulgar is going to give you 4 cups cooked. You double your water.
So if you are doing 1 cup dry then use 2 cups of water/broth.
My perfect all purpose Bulgar recipe in the Instant Pot is:
1 Cup Bulgar Wheat
2 Cups water prepared with Better than Bullion Chicken
1 Teaspoon Salt
2 Teaspoon Wildtree California Garlic and Pepper Blend (sub 1 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground pepper)
Add ingredients to Instant Pot, and set to manual for 8 minutes. If you like yours with more of a bite, do a quick release when the 8 minutes are done. I like mine a little more creamy, so I do a 10 minute natural then release the rest of the pressure.
This is an excellent rice substitution for most recipes that use rice. I actually prefer it in my Easy and Fast Veggie Stir Fry.
Bulgar is only 4 points for a whole cup, which is A LOT. I usually use 1/2 cup with recipes like that, for a total of 2 points.
Some other recipes that use Bulgar:
Staple Meal – Stuffed Pepper Soup
Aside from writing this blog, I have a new novel out. Going Home is a book about second chances, set in a holiday obsessed town. If you like Hallmark movies, you’ll love this book!

If you could only have one instant pot, would it be 6 quart or 8?

I have both…lol If I had to give one up I’d give up the 6 so that I had the larger size.

Sounds like an excellent ideal switch. Thank you!

What if you don’t have a instapot to make the bulgar?

You can simmer on the stove until the liquid is gone 🙂

Hi! The WW website says Bulgur Wheat is 4 points for 1/4 cup. Is that before it’s cooked so it “expands” to 1 cup for 4 points? I am always looking for a good rice substitute. Thank you!
